Well, though we couldn’t make a habit of it, we were lucky enough to make it to two amazing concerts in the same weekend. On Friday I surprised Elisabeth with a late birthday gift, taking her to JMU in Harrisonburg to see one of her (and my) favorite artists, Amos Lee. What a talent! This man has some serious soul. If you don’t know, you need to check him out.

On Saturday night, we saw one of my favorite bands, Muse, at William & Mary Hall in Williamsburg. I didn’t think I would ever get to see them since they seem to mostly tour in Europe or major US cities not really around here. I would definitely see them again anytime. Enjoy the pics, you can definitely see our excitement after the show. :)

shek-i-dow :) Finally, after at least five years. Do I look smart? No wait, don’t answer that.

I’m now 28. Lord have mercy on us all.

Age is a funny thing. It simultaneously unites and separates us; it defines us as we define it; we eagerly anticipate it and we defy it. I remember when I could not wait to be 16, then 18, then 21, and then… hmm, all of sudden, I kind of stopped having countdowns, I kind of stopped thinking about it, or worse, began to have negative thoughts. I got to an age where more and more, I started hearing phrases like “getting old,” “downhill” and “grandpa” from my friends, peers and even my wife!! After all, 28 is almost 30, and that’s almost 40, and then we all now what happens next…

On Friday I was informed that my job as Operations Manager for Environmental Career Opportunities is coming to a close. More explicitly, because of internal system automation and the inability of a side project to take off, my position will be dropping down from full time, to part time. This essentially puts me out of a job and into that anxious stage of the the job hunt. I have approximately three weeks to do find one, a timeframe I am thankful for, but I also realize the time will be short.  I am in good spirits about the whole situation, knowing in my heart that the Lord is my provider and my sustenance and when one door closes another door, or window opens.  But this also brings back into the spotlight larger issues of calling and specifically music for this stage of life.  It has been an incredibly frustrating year in terms of our group, Bridgeland, to work at creating music.  I think not only about what my next “job” will be, but how that will affect my ability to still try and work at music, and about what the next stage of life may bring.  My thoughts are not very clear at this point, and so I ask for your continued prayers – for clarity, awareness, and for the right opportunity.

For the last several weeks, Elisabeth and I have been attending a discussion group entitled “the Irrelevant Church.” While the title may seem irreverant at first glance, this series of discussions attempted to examine the role of the church as it has engaged, and continues to engage nonviolence through various time periods. Each week we were given a reading from prominent leaders and activists as a basis for discussion, including Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Luther King Jr., Ron Sider, Stanley Hauerwas and Desmond Tutu. In the six months of our marriage, Elisabeth and I have made a habit of having a date night. Once a week we’ll go out somewhere – a movie, for dinner, a walk, or sometimes just stay at home – but regardless, we have chosen to just set apart some space for quality time together. After having lived apart for our entire dating period, this is a very welcome lifestyle choice. This past Friday night, after a nice meal at home, we went for a walk on the downtown mall. The night was crisp, but pleasant and after checking out some of the latest additions to the Pavilion, we headed to Escafe for some delicious organic coffee and the most amazing Creme Brulee either of us has ever experienced. If you ever visit us, remind us to take you there. It’s so good! By 9:45 we had just enough time to end up at Regal cinemas to watch “The Namesake.” Below is a description of the film. The Neff women got together for the 10th time this past weekend! We alternate at different people’s houses, so that everyone has a chance to come…sometimes in Lancaster, Seattle, and Indiana. This time it was held at mama Krabill’s house in IN! Everyone had different little projects this time, ate a lot, watched movies, and enjoyed hanging out together. The only boy allowed is Grandpa Neff and he does a good job of hanging out with that much Neff estrogen. We had a great time! Check out the pictures on the Photos page!
